Cucumber tree (Blue magnolia)

It originates from North America and East Asia, where about 30 species grow. The tree is 20 to 30 m tall, with a conical crown and elongated leaves.

There is one specimen growing in the park, which has favorable conditions for growth (not very demanding on the soil and with sufficient moisture) and has therefore grown to remarkable dimensions – one of the largest magnolias of its kind in Central Europe.

The magnolia was planted in our park at the beginning of the 20th century (1900s), and the seedling was brought to Betliar from Moravia. The gardener at the time tried to propagate it vegetatively, which is why it has branches that grow straight up. In 2018, the tree participated in the Tree of the Year competition, in which it took a respectable third place.
